Out of contract players 2023: Staying or Going

Collingwood Players Out of Contract in 2023 Collingwood Player Contracts

Name Years Service Status
Aiden Begg 3 Non-Free Agent
Arlo Draper 2 Non-Free Agent
Ash Johnson 3 Non-Free Agent
Cooper Murley 2 Non-Free Agent
Harvey Harrison 2 Non-Free Agent
John Noble 5 Non-Free Agent
Josh Carmichael 2 Non-Free Agent
Mason Cox 9 Restricted Free Agent
Oleg Markov 1 Non-Free Agent
Oscar Steene 1 Non-Free Agent
Tom Wilson 4 Non-Free Agent
Trent Bianco 4 Non-Free Agent
Trey Ruscoe 4 Non-Free Agent
Will Kelly 5 Non-Free Agent

With much player turnover since 2020, it shall be interesting to see who doesn't have their contracts renewed going into 2024. Those who may be in trouble:

* Kelly: helps having dad as CEO but am I a KPP, Winger or durable enough?
* Bianco: 4 seasons and is a tad vanilla
* T Wilson: the experiment is over
* Murley: doesn't look close to debuting and way back in pecking order
* Draper: hope stays but needs to get a hurry along

You sense that:

* Steene
* Johnson
* Begg

are project, longer term players given their height and attributes requiring longer to mature.

Undoubtedly:

* Cox
* Noble

shall be offered contract extensions and I think Ruscoe has a lot to offer in a life post Howe or in selection pressure against Murphy/Frampton. Carmichael and Harrison hopefully get extensions as I think there is something to build on there with Markov a 50:50 bet depending how he completes the 2023 season.

Thoughts?

Agree 100% with all of that.

I think as a side in the top 4, you would think we may want to keep some backup depth.

But I reckon list management will try to bring someone in to put direct pressure on the 22.

The obvious Big man is always first on people's mind, but a Parish type will serve us well.

I reckon we will be turning over anyone they don't see as improving our 22. (Taking retirements into account

i would think as of right now, Markov is better than 50/50 having played in every game so far (albeit some as sub) since he debuted in R4

Me thinks its time that WHE wasnt a collingwood player in 2024.

I feel 2023 is his last.

I have questions over Cox to what the next step is for Cox.

We need a KPF and another young ruck.

Largely agree with your summary, inxs88, except that I think Carmichael might be one of the unlucky ones if he can’t break back into the team soon (and it seems like he’s not currently anywhere near the front of the queue for the selection panel). I also wonder if we really need both Begg and Steene moving forward and whether other clubs might come knocking for one of them.

Bianco would be the one of your "in trouble" group I’d be most sorry to go, but I can’t disagree with your assessment unfortunately.

We have a young ruck, his name is Oscar Steene, he plays in the VFL.

Aiden Begg is also a ruck but may develop into more of key position player, has put on a bit of weight since last season.

It’s unfortunate but if Ruscoe doesn’t want to stay, reckon he would be playing regularly with the eagles and Freo. Can see a late trade happening there. Keep otherwise

I thought Murley was looking good last year and early this year. Will be lucky to remain on the rookie list.

Draper hasn’t made it and hasn’t shown that much in the VFL when he’s played.

Wilson to be delisted

Macrae to be picked and show something otherwise he needs to be traded / delisted to get an opportunity somewhere else. Should have played by now from consistency alone. Is there something we’re not seeing?

If anyone knows the keys to Will Kelly’s mind will you give it a tune and a Rev up to get him moving. He seems to have all the attributes to be a good KPP but just appears to lack the desire. We’re always on the lookout for a KPP and we have one here who doesn’t seem to want to have a go. Frustrating is probably the best way to sum him up. Maybe he’s only got 8 rounds left to make a difference.

Bianco worth persevering. Played a lot across half back this year.

Derek Hine indicated we were targeting one or two players by FA or trade and 2 or 3 draft picks. Unless we have surprise retirement from WHE Sidey Howe or Elliot I’m thinking the delistings above are enough.
Ed Allen kicked our last goal of the year at the 58minute mark of the last quarter

You'd think with DeGoey out Carmichael may have been given an opportunity but correct, he seems down the pecking order given he isn't on the weekly emergency list.

Those that get dumped after the season will be those where the club believes they can't improve, and no other clubs have shown interest in them (re-trade).
Contracted players will be traded at the "Wright" price.

All clubs have to shed x amount of players,
