The AFL website's Sydney GF Player Ratings:

Brodie Grundy – 3

Seven Sydney players were rated 3, so that makes Grundy Sydney's =14th-20th best player, according to afl.com.au.

Brissy Player Ratings:

Darcy Fort – 6
"Wasn't overawed on the big stage despite his limited senior football in recent years. Ripped the ball out of the middle to set up Kai Lohmann's second goal in the first term, finishing with 20 hitouts and four clearances."

Joe Daniher – 8
"If this is it, what a game to bow out on. A true Joe Daniher classic. Kicked 2.4 – including a pearler to finish the game, celebrating with the crowd before being mobbed by teammates – and was more than handy as the relief ruck. Had four clearances of his own, straight out of the middle and into the waiting hands of teammates inside 50. A surprise highlight was a run-down tackle on speedster Errol Gulden in the third term."


Big Joe destroyed Grundy in the ruck. It shows another reason why a good KPF is way, way, way superior to a "good" ruckman. The power forwards can usually fill in in the ruck totally fine. No ruckman could possibly play fullback on the power forwards. And it's very, very rare for a ruckman to be able to play forward. The ruckmen can't handle having an opponent. When they play in the ruck, they benefit from "cheating". They don't play on each other. They just cheat by running to different parts of the ground and hoping their teammates get the ball to give them. So e.g. one ruckman will be on one wing and his oppo ruckman will be on the other wing. In the old days both ruckmen were camped at CHB with no opponent. Nowadays they might just roll the dice and run forward hoping their team gets the ball to give them a cheapo.

Daniher attended 22 ruck contests out of 80. He finished with a hitout win rate of 4.5% and had 1 hitout to advantage. So, he got his hand to the ball in the ruck once in 22 goes. That's a funny version of "destruction". Even the absent McLean attended 21 ruck contests for 6 hitouts.

The AFL site's ratings are, of course, ridiculous. If Fort had been on the losing team, given the way they rated players, they would have had to give him -12. Grundy had 7 clearances, 15 hitouts to advantage (which is a thumping in the ruck on any day) and 18 contested possessions (to Fort's 6).

Ok if your going to use stats please state correct stats
He had 5 hit outs to advantage from attending over 65 ruck contests
His contested possessions is a major reason why the swans where flogged
You see when you drop the ball at your own feet and fall on it and hit it out randomly just to get a stat
I do agree some what the afl ratings are a bit of a joke
Grundy’s game at best was a 2
Based on he turned up at the right ground on the right day wearing the right uniform
That in itself is a minor miracle remember which club he’s at thar season

We never should have lost him
Now he’s playing in his rightful position his performances show his value
It the complete opposite for Grundy
In real undeniable terms we are paying Grundy to stay away and play elsewhere
And it’s worked a treat
We’ve won a premiership and Grundy has personally stopped 2 team from winning one

He’s “not quite hard enough at it”. He cost us a shot at the 2019 Grand Final, was unceremoniously booted at the second of two goes at moving him on because he failed dismally in the 2019 and 2020 Finals and then personally handed Melbourne a flag in under 2 minutes of the weakest centre-square work we have ever witnessed - while Bont took a quick breather he single-handedly turned victory to defeat. We’d have to be actually insane to have him back.
