Imagine ourselves at 18, and at 25 (if we can remember lol)

You're a man, 10 kilos heavier. you're more assertive, positive or otherwise.

It takes time, exceptions aside, hard for a recruiter to pick early.

Steene can take a mark, he grabs high and his fingers stick. Plays like a natural. Seems to be aerobically capable of playing at the highest level too.

The least a big man should be able to do is Mark the thing and be the big man.

Grundy of course is also 204cm.

A fair bit to like about this selection.
Grundy was 200cm at Collingwood, since moving to Melbourne he's apparently grown 3cm.

I always thought he was 204cm but this link says 203 cm .

Welcome to the club, Oscar.

Good to have added some depth to our ruck stocks.

How Promising Ruckman Rose From Amateur Reserves

How Promising Ruckman Rose From Amateur Reserves To Collingwood’s List In One Season

Oscar Steene has experienced a meteoric rise over the course of the past 12 months.

The 19-year-old was signed by Collingwood via the SSP earlier this week, less than a year after playing Division 1 reserves football in Adelaide.

Standing at 201cm, the former West Adelaide ruckman has been added by the Magpies to provide further depth to their ruck stocks following the departure of Brodie Grundy last trade period.

First-year Bloods coach Adam Hartlett outlined why the Pies would have opted to select Steene despite his lack of senior experience.

“We weren’t surprised at all. There were a couple of other clubs sniffing around Oscar, as well, if he didn’t land at the Pies,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“We started our preparations for the season ahead with not having him available.

“We’re so stoked for him. He sort of burst onto the scene towards the back-end of last season at SANFL level.

“He was really, really impressive playing that number one ruck role for our senior side. He went back to reserves grade for their finals campaign and was sensational there too.”

Steene, who played four SANFL games for the Westies in 2022, might be seen by many as a long-term prospect but Hartlett feels he has the scope to step up for Craig McRae’s Pies this year if need be.

“I certainly think with other 6 to 12 months of education and building his body up that he can play some AFL footy towards the back-end of this coming season,” the former Carlton player added.

“I think he can have an impact this season. I’ve got no doubt about that.

“Honestly, I think he can step in and play a role for the Pies towards the back-end of the season, for sure.

“It seems the higher level he plays, the better player he becomes. He was playing Div 1 reserves footy (with Goodwood Saints) last year and has just worked his way through the grades.

“He was really impactful at senior level in the SANFL. It was an incredible journey to be a part of.”

Hartlett loves the way Steene applies himself, especially whenever he is called upon to step up at a higher level.

“He was playing reserves footy at amateur level during last season and every opportunity he got at a higher grade, he just took that next step and it was really impressive,” he said further.

“His ruck craft is really impressive. He’s a smart kid, he loves to compete and he’s really, really good in the air. He takes some big marks around the ground for us.

“It’s funny, when you see him train he sort of just lopes a little bit, then once he’s competing and in match sim and versing oppo, he’s just got that desire to compete. He’s really aggressive and he’s really impressive to watch.

“I think the Pies have got a good one. I flicked him a text the other day when we got the news and the sort of kid he is, he got back to me straight away.

“He was really appreciative of all the time and effort the club put into helping him get to this next level of footy.”

Steene will work alongside Darcy Cameron, Mason Cox and Aiden Begg as he strives to make his presence felt in his debut season at the AIA Centre.

Oscar, come on down. He gets a chance to perform in the VFL and put his hand up for AFL selection. Stranger things have happened.

The good thing is he'll be up against a 30yo 206cm 108kg ruck with AFL experience tonight.

Go better than expected and he might be a sneaky chance.

Get monstered and the selection decision will be an easy one.
He's mad. He's bad. He's MaynHARD!
