So that's your full list of the better (or more important -- some mix of the two) players than them at the club, is it, P4S?

(Again, with free agency, you also need to think about the better players who are not at the club who might have been.)

The salary cap has increased substantially since those 2017 figures. 2017 was the year the new 6-year agreement was reached (in June). The salary cap was instantly increased by 20%. It continues to rise with annual increments.

The latest figures we have are for 2018:

$0-60k 1
$60-100k 24
101-200k 159
201-300k 136
301-400k 145
401-500k 88
501-600k 49
601-700k 46
701-800k 24
801-900k 15
901-1m 10
1m-1.1m 2
1.1m-1.2m 1
1.2m+ 3

Wonder who the poor bastard who earnt $0-60k last year was. Suppose it's okay if it's closer to 60 than to 0.

$500k-ish is still roughly top 20%.

It’s a mystery, isn’t it - given that the minimum rookie salary in 2018 was $75,000? There seems to be a lot of “lag” in these figures.

I was wondering whether that was a provisionally suspended player... but that would be 2019, right?

I have heard Cox has totally denied this on his facebook page, and elsewhere.

Denied what, Pnc? P4S's post on p.7 says his manager confirmed Essendon's interest.

Denied what? That he’s paid over $500,000 a year?

In 1990:

$0-60k 442
$60k-$100k 88
$100k-$200k 8

Wonder who the special 8 were. Not Jim Manson, surely.

That’s a possibility but because there’s no transparency, we don’t really know. I don’t understand why the details of contracts aren’t public - they are in the NFL and it takes the heat out of things because there’s less scope for speculation.

Yes averages. You're giving figures that are of the AFL, not Collingwood, so you're assuming that Collingwood's numbers will be those / 18.

That's not how it works. That assumes the distribution of talent and salary is the same for every club, which it obviously isn't.

For example, apart from Stephenson, we haven't had a top 30 pick since De Goey. Clubs who have had many top 30 picks will be paying their young recruits more than us (I don't know how it works with academy father son etc).

That's just one example. The point is you're making assumptions that aren't the case.

I’m actually not sure why we even have such an obsession with players wages, particularly when we really don’t have a clue as to what’s going on.
It’s now a managers job to work just as hard as setting these guys up with income streams after footy. Stuff that’s obviously outside the cap and it’s really pointless to attempt to guess ( future ) football contracts when so much more is involved in the overall package these days.
Dylan Shiel is a classic recent example. Offered less money at Essendon but set up for life in property development with Andrew Welsh ( former player ) after his playing days are over.
There’s plenty of ways to skin a cat, most of which we will never hear about, nor have a need to hear about either.
