Congratulations S Waugh

Post by Fradam »

Congratulations to S Waugh for making 10,000 runs in test cricket. Only the third man to do it and the second Australian.

The way he's batting he looks like he wants to hear some Reggae music come March.

I think some humble pie might have to be eaten by so called "cricket experts" for writing off a champion and making a mockery of his second test innings in Melbourne.

I don't get why people write off champions ??

Secondly if the side is being picked on form then surely Martyn is the man under the pump ??

CONGRATLUATIONS STEVE WAUGH ONCE A CHAMPION ALWAYS A CHAMPION

I've followed Test Cricket for 43 years and just seen a truly fantastic innings!!

Steve Waugh equalled Sir Donald Bradman's number of centuries, passed 5000 runs in Oz and 10,000 in Test cricket but this knock was less memorable for these reasons than the way it all came about.

Before the Boxing Day Test, I mentioned to BJ that Tugga's main problems were the batsmen above him in his own team and that he really needed a bit of a collapse to bring out his best.

Well it was all there today but this was even better than the skipper digging his team out of a hole with his well known guts and determination. This was magnificent!!

Not even a deft placement for two to bring up the ton was good enough for this innings. He flayed the last ball of the day through the covers to the boundary. 102 not out and more to come. Yes, Gilly is doing a great job as well. More later.

Donny.

Typical Steve Waugh back-to-the wall innings. As Donny mentioned earlier, he put it to me that Steve needed a collpase of some sort to spur him on and he was spot-on!
I was a bit negative, but I would suggest Mrs. Waugh breaks out the suitcases and starts packing the Caribean clothes, because Steve, you have just won an all-expenses paid trip to the West-Indies!

Onya!

Waugh century crowns magical day at Sydney
Stephen Lamb - 3 January 2003

Surely, Test cricket never came any better than this. Three innings of class and aggression, from Alec Stewart, Adam Gilchrist and above all from Steve Waugh, for whom you simply couldn't have written a better script. After becoming only the third batsman to pass 10,000 Test runs, the Australian captain drove the final ball of the day from Richard Dawson to the cover boundary to complete his 29th Test hundred, equalling Sir Donald Bradman's record. England, truly combative at last, are still 125 runs ahead with Australia on 237 for five.

Waugh and his vice-captain resume an unbroken sixth-wicket partnership of 87 tomorrow, which threatens England's hopes of a substantial first-innings lead. They came together at a paltry 150 for five, after first Andrew Caddick and then Steve Harmison had shown rare fallibility in Australia's top five. Their response was immediate and electrifying. Waugh's 102 came off just 130 balls, while Gilchrist, perhaps more predictably, rattled off a run-a-ball 45.

The day ended amid high drama, as the will-he-won't-he issue of Waugh's hundred kept virtually every spectator glued to his seat until that memorable last ball. With Gilchrist blazing away in idiosyncratic style, it was a joyful reminder of cricket's capacity to entertain regally on multiple fronts. Hardly in the game's history can gate money have been better spent.

I have to admit I was very teary watching Steve Waugh play today as he did play extremely well and I agree with JLC that he was well supported by Gilchrist. I also agree with JLC (shock! horror!) that the man under pressure now is Damian Martyn! I was really disappointed in him today he played a very silly shot and it was a really good chance for him to get a century. I really like Martyn and I hope another one of my favourites batsman doesn't get the axe! I don't think Steve Waugh should hang around though he should leave on a high note!
