Trade Winds: Get Matt Rowell

Post by Take_a_Screamer »

This is early for next year's draft. Do we have Matt Rowell in our sights?

Victorian powerhouse (Collingwood) tipped to chase former Pick 1 selection

"Winners of the APS championships in 2018, Rowell, alongside Anderson, lifted the premiership cup with none other than Collingwood star Nick Daicos." ...Houston: "I'm super grateful for Nick in particular, who from what I've heard, pushed it a fair bit." Could the star Pie do it again (with Rowell)?

So assuming McGuane goes as a first round pick next year (for which we need to bank points in next years draft given we traded that pick out to GC in the Houston deal) then we will be one of the first clubs to test trading our 2years of first round draft picks with 26 and 27 picks necessary. If McGuane slides and doesn't get taken in the first round (as with current expectations on Camporeale bros compared to a year ago) then we'd be in trouble (no 24, no 25, no 26, no 27) as it means no first round draft picks in a 4 year period).

Maybe its just me but sounds like a risky strategy and we'd have to be certain on McGuane's draft range ahead of the trade period. So to go after another big trade target next year I think we'd have to be prepared to trade someone out if the draft capital isn't there.

Let's ask a different question though, would Rowell make us better so as to align with Fly's don't want to develop young players strategy? Is that worth giving up another 2 first rounders? He gets it a lot for GC but Noah Anderson seems to be more MVP than Rowell IMO. We ditched their U18 captain Trent Bianco already. Where was Rowell in the Daicos / Houston / Moore / DeGoey Oakleigh Chargers group?

I'd assume it's a click-baity type of story. They're hard up for clicks in this lull between trades and draft day. Mind you, I think most clubs will be looking at trading out of the 2027 draft due to Tassie.

Yeah.
If the future first is compromised, our path is a possible player trade. I can't think of anyone to offer up.

There is no real sustance in this except Cal just saying he would be one of the players would be interested in IF he didn't re-sign.
He could very much re-sign during pre-season and it ends that. But who wouldn't want Matt Rowell?

Swoop Luke's thoughts on getting Matt Rowell to the club

"On the slight off chance we could get Matt Rowell, just image what an absolute powerhouse we would be..."

in 12 months time, Rowell will be 24 years old. He has 9, 10 years in front of him. He's as good as just about any midfielder in the competition. So yes, please get him.

He is a south-eastern Melbourne boy, but likes the country lifestyle (Look out for Geelong). He has a Dunkley-Treloar like bromance with Noah Anderson. But who did he support growing up? Does anyone know?

What worries me is the cost of the trade and if other clubs can entice him. A better option that Petracca. Can it be done?

I had posted months ago ( probably in this thread ) Collingwood we’re into Rowell. Fly is his unashamed #1 fan boy. On the one hand it’s a story but on the other hand, it’s not because most other Vic clubs have spoken to his manager also. The potential for Rowell to come home is real and it’s for a unique reason. His body’s physiology ( or something like that ) doesn’t respond well after travelling by plane and he generally struggles to be at his best whenever he plays interstate. The difference in performance levels between his home and away games ( particularly recently ) is significant. Obviously if he can can get back to a Vic club where he would travel less, then he has more chance of being at his best more often. The Suns are obviously aware of it, so maybe they may yet consider trading him out .. if the price was right. He’s also only 180cm, just for the benefit of the “ no midgets “ brigade.

Personally, I think the Houston trade has made it really difficult for Collingwood to ever be a front runner for his signature anyway, particularly given that a number of Vic clubs will start the next trade period with two first rounders in their back pocket.

I was telling people that we should have gone after him this year.
GC have some other young inside mids coming through. We had a player that they wanted (Noble). There was room in our salary cap to offer him. And we were clearly prepared to trade picks this year. Also he had a quieter year so his currency would have been down.

This of course would have been instead of getting Houston. Which in my opinion, would have filled a greater need (a young gun inside mid).

Suns are easy trade partners too. Sure, they wont just hand him over for pick 46, but they are much easier to deal with than certain other clubs.

If Rowell says "Collingwood", then it'll happen.
