That’s correct. The northern states have maintained their rights to all academy players, while the Vic clubs have had their academy “ discounts “ heavily diluted. It’s a pity because the southern states are now running down their academy development programs because the incentives no longer apply.
Jed Walter will likely be called out # 2 or # 3, so he’s a serious talent.
Nate Caddy might be one we keep our eye on, relative to our likely indicative draft position. He’s not overly tall at 193cm and from the Northern Knights but plays well above his height ( plays a bit like Darcy Fogarty )

To even get in the conversation we would have to give up this year first rounder + next years first round.

Given clubs will assume we will be at the pointy end of the ladder next year too.

Even then, you have plenty of sides with better draft capital then Collingwood.



We need to forget the 'lets package up this player with a pick', these kinds of trades have not happened for years.

The Suns will lose currency in any event with their pick 6, so they can either elect to accumulate more points, go into deficit or balance it up with points + a player.

If we wanted to trade higher up into this years draft, it'll likely involve our 2024 1st rounder.

Our draft picks as they stand ~

Round 1 Pick 18 = 985 points
Round 2 Pick 33 = 563 points (received from Carlton in 2022)

2024 first rounder = 1,047 points (average points if we achieve of a top 4 finish)

That'd give us 2,595 points. Still not enough to get us into the top 10.

Indicative draft order and associated points. We're deep down the list. Even if we traded our 2024 1st, it wouldn't change our negotiating currency materially.

The reality is i think the club will go back to the draft with the hand we have...we may get some minor picks for the likes of Bianco and Mcare heading elsewhere.


Unless we are willing to trade a big fish (Think De Goey) we wont be getting into the pointy end of the draft.

When you think we brought in four players last year...probably not a bad move to just hit the draft this year.

If Ruscoe's exit visa is indeed already stamped, should he want to return to W.A. we can only hope a competitive tender develops between WCE and Freo, possibly throwing a higher second round pick our way.

I can see Carmichael, Murley and Wilson making way for a couple of fresh faces, but the list might be little changed from where it currently sits. Beyond our pick 18 and 33 our next is pick 74. With that I'd stick with what we have on the list and transfer the likes of Draper and Richards onto the rookie list.

I still believe it'll prove one of the more interesting drafts from a pick trading perspective. Does WCE trade out 1 for multiple picks?
Will early bids come for the trio of GCS academy players, forcing GCS to match?
Either way there's going to be a flurry of activity when the first 5 names are called out.

What's the minimum number of picks a club has to use on draft night? Is it 3? I'd reckon that minimum would be our maximum. If there's any points value in our picks post number 3, they would have more value bundled up and traded to Gold Coast who are in need.

The scenario facing the 2023 Draft is that list spots have never been tighter at club land. Therefore, you'll most likely see:

* 52 players approximately only get drafted
* Means our pick 74 shall come down to an early 50's pick
* We are likely only going to draft 2 maybe 3 fresh players
* If Bianco and Ruscoe do command 3rd or 4th round picks, we shall likely bundle them or ask for futures. Won't be anything sub 50 though.
* Rumours we may bundle our future first and 2023 first to go up the order
* Time to target replacements for:

i. Brody MIhocek: Archer Reid 202cm Forward looks promising
ii. Pendles: best available
iii. Steele: best available


Understanding our current list which is playing one over with the addition of Markov for C Dean who was placed on the long-term injury list is important. It's likely that the following occurs:

1. Outs from Primary List:

* Kelly: delisted
* Bianco: delist or traded
* Ruscoe: likely traded
* Draper (maybe Rookie listed or delisted)

2. Outs from Rookie List and Category B:

* Carmichael: possible Crows bound
* Murley: delisted
* Tom Wilson: another basketball experiment is over

3. Curve Balls:

* Steele: if we win GF he may just retire
* Kreuger: wasn't on a 3 year deal, and yet to accept a 1 year extension
* F Macrae: likely to stay as is contracted but clubs may come in trade week


Summary:

If scenarios 1 and 2 happen, that means the primary list can accommodate an upgrade of Ash Johnson (re-signed for 2 years) onto the Primary List plus at least 3 new players. It would mean on the Rookie List for 2024:

* O Steene
* A Begg
* O Markov
* C Dean
* open spot or A Draper
