MASON Cox has credited a heartfelt discussion with Collingwood coach Craig McRae with turning around an AFL career he believed was about to expire.

The 31-year-old American - who gained Australian citizenship this year - was already planning for life after football when a poor game against the Brisbane Lions in round five led to him being dropped to the reserves.

But a subsequent meeting with mentor McRae over dinner put all the cards on the table and ultimately gave Cox the confidence to fight for his place in the team.

Summary from my read, Cox took some feedback on board, went back to the VFL and worked until the coaches were satisfied and bought him back in.

Mature response and good outcome.

Mason Cox almost joined Fremantle

Post by Presti35 »

From Texas to Fremantle, via Collingwood?

Outspoken American big man Mason Cox has revealed a phone call from Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir during the off-season nearly landed him at the Dockers.

Wow. That would have been something. Lobb missing out on his wish to get to GWS stopped the possibility of this happening. And Lobb is trying to move again this year. But you'd think Cox will be staying put.

Which jumper? The new purple one, or the old one that has two dicks on it?

That was a really good story on Mason. Looking forward to him getting back in the team, he's a key part of the side.

And Darcy... was he at the beach!

Coxy has not only matured into a very good footballer in the position that takes the longest to learn, ruck, he also has an ability to fire up the team. On top of that, let's never forget his amazing story, frightening eye injury, ability to push through the cowardly criticism from the stands, and consistent community contribution. You can tell he's a smart, courageous, decent lad like our captain.

The rubbish in social media from northern rugby flogs and Collingwood haters is abhorrent. This bloke is a great example of having a crack and has grown into an amazing ambassador. Society needs to be better.
