Who gives a sh*t right now. Mason is available and Grundy is not.The General wrote:They are pretty telling stats.Pies4shaw wrote:What is it that Cox is said to be doing, other than battling manfully in a position he isn't really up to playing? He's kicked 6 goals in 15 games , managed not to be hopeless in the ruck (average of 17 hitouts per game), managed 9 disposals and 3 marks per game and we've been slaughtered in the clearances and for contested ball. He's done his best and been admirable - but he's still a VFL-quality player.
Here's the comparison of 2021 Grundy v 2022 Cox - it isn't pretty: https://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_ ... 021&fid2=S
The comparison is no more flattering.
You've missed the point of this thread altogether - it's actually not about Grundy.

The "point of the thread" is that Cox has become "a good ruckman". No he hasn't. My observation is that it's great that he's battled and hasn't been tragically awful but he doesn't play his position to the required standard. He's been admirable - he just remains a below-average player.
Thus, he's 31st in the AFL for average hitouts per game this season. He has taken fewer marks this year than Howe, Moore, Noble, Crisp, Maynard, Sidebottom, Josh Daicos, Nick Daicos, WHE, Cameron, Quaynor, Mihocek, Lipinski, Pendlebury, Elliott, De Goey and Ginnivan. He's equal-14h on our goal-kicking tally and has one goal assist.

McRae for Governor-General!
So, what is it that you think he does to an acceptable AFL-standard? It isn't rucking, goal-kicking, marking or contested marking, so what is it?
Here's the current season comparison with Darcy Cameron: https://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_ ... 1=S&fid2=S

So according to that, they are basically equal on contested marks, hitouts, marks inside 50, inside 50's etc. Cameron gets more possessions which is good, but you for some reason won't or can't acknowledge that Cox has stepped up and done well in the ruck this year in Grundy's absence?
As a duo, they are averaging 35 hitouts per game to Gawn and Jackson combined 37 and 1.3 goals a game to 1.2.

You clearly have no idea about team stability, role responsibility within a team do you.Pies4shaw wrote:So, what is it that you think he does to an acceptable AFL-standard? It isn't rucking, goal-kicking, marking or contested marking, so what is it?

Again as others have pointed out this is not about the others. It's about the role he is playing and how he has held down his spot.
An odd hill for you to die on but I guess you'd rather we somehow pick a magical player out of nowhere to replace him?
Stop making this about others or yourself. It's really odd.
Collingwood FOREVER.

^I understand people wanting hearty debate to run, but I do think we can flesh out the analysis.
You refer to data, but I haven't seen any serious data on roles, team dynamics, goals, strategy, team stability, player engagement, motivation, mental health, impact moments, etc., which given McRae's cutting-edge coaching approach, would matter to him. Not to mention, the data resets for Coxy following his unique slow development circumstances, vicious eye injury, and now radically different coach, values and game plan.

I would like to see some stats that support the point of view that Brodie Grundy is worth his $7 million contract, because so far no one has come up with any, instead just resorting to repeating how many hit outs he amasses, despite everyone knowing that hit outs do not win games of football.uuuuu..... We're probably a little off topic here but fair to say Grundy was the hottest property in the AFL at one point - The point of his contract negotiations of course
Let me add statistics have a place but footy is subjective.
There is no one stat that will tell you what wins games of footy,... except the scoreboard at the end.
