No they’re not. That’s been made pretty clear. Paying for the mediation but no other legal costs for Porter, plus there’s no settlement. Important to get this stuff right because it makes a big difference.

That's correct. They're just paying the costs of the mediation last Friday. Those will be, in legal terms, trivial. By implication, the parties are bearing their own costs of the legal proceedings.

I'm not going to get into a back and forth about this, at all, but plainly, in technical legal parlance, he has been "pantsed".

Pulling back from the legal niceties, he has managed to achieve by his press conference back then and ill-conceived, now aborted litigation something akin to a guarantee that people will always talk about him henceforth in connection with - or referencing - these allegations.

It still stands: Christian Porter is still reasonably suspected of rape. Public interest journalism still stands. Christian Porter drops defamation case (like a hot potato)

Wendy Bacon on the money as always. He still loses big time.

The ABC has been forced to clarify matters following Porter's lies.

It has reaffirmed that it did not regret the article, and it “stands by the importance of the article”, which “remains online without any amendments”. The ABC added that the article was not sensationalist, it was "an accurate and factual report on a letter that had been sent to the prime minister and two other senior politicians." The ABC remains absolutely committed to the public release of 27 pages worth of defence evidence presented to the court and currently kept secret.

(We can usefully take note here that the collapse of Porter's lawsuit immediately followed the presentation of the defence case - the very evidence Porter now wants to be kept secret. Draw your own conclusion.)

Porter came across as quite desperate in his post mediation press conference. One of the reasons why is that he was desperate to get onto the front foot was to deflect from the ABC absolute rejection his earlier offer of a settlement where the ABC admit wrongdoing.

To be clear for the few numbskulls around: The ABC did not apologise and stand by their journalist for public interest journalism. When Porter lost the pre court wranglings trying to prevent the ABC using all of its information ( he was trying to prevent a disclosure of sorts) and when one of his high profile barristers was found to have a conflict of interests and wasn’t able to represent him and with the ensuing political consequences before a possible election he chose to withdraw and put up the white flag hoping that a few far right nutter mates on the right wing media will be enough to get him through. In short he lost (big time)

Here's the latest Porter info:

https://www.theage.com.au/national/chri ... 580e2.html
Christian Porter and his defamation barrister have been ordered to pay legal costs, expected to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, after losing a court fight with a friend of the woman who accused the federal minister Mr Porter of rape.

Jo Dyer launched Federal Court proceedings against prominent defamation barrister Sue Chrysanthou, SC, in May to stop her acting for Mr Porter in his defamation case against the ABC.
By the way, if anybody is interested to understand why it is that good judgement generally dictates that one not commence defamation proceedings in such circumstances, a heavily-redacted affidavit of Mr Bradley (Ms Dyer's solicitor) is on the Federal Court's website at https://www.fedcourt.gov.au/services/ac ... pdated.pdf

Porter's statement of claim is exhibited as an annexure at pages 16 to 26 of that document. The problem with an "all-guns-blazing" strategy in a confined space is that bullets do tend to ricochet.

The Federal Court has now published the complainant's statement, along with other things. It is quite distressing (and detailed), so please consider carefully whether you want to read any of it. It is accessible here: https://www.fedcourt.gov.au/services/ac ... hrysanthou

Boom: Porter boasted about the dead woman according to a complainant to the police who knew the deceased woman. Porter continues to look dodgy.

'After Porter relinquished the attorney general’s portfolio, he was appointed minister for industry and science.'

Sickening.

A 26-year-old man accused of raping Brittany Higgins inside a minister's office at Parliament House in 2019 has been summonsed to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court.

In a statement, ACT Policing said they will allege the man had sexual intercourse without consent at Parliament House on Saturday, March 23, 2019.

Surely that is rape which is a far more serious felony.
Annoying opposition supporters since 1967.
