Post by The Boy Who Cried Wolf »

Hi Guys..

Thought we could do something fun and try to select a Nick's Pie's Team of the 21st Century i.e from 2001-2020.
If there are enough reply's with teams listed in the below format, I'll collate them to see what the most popular team is...

So here's my team...

B H.Shaw S.Prestigiacomo J.Clement
HB S.Burns D.Moore B.Johnson

C D.Thomas N.Buckley T.Lockyer
R D.Jolly S.Pendlebury D.Swan

HF S.Sidebottom A.Rocca A.Didak
F P.Medhurst T.Cloke A.Krakouer

I B.Grundy S.O'Bree L.Ball C.Tarrant

Honorable mention to L.Davis ( I blame that drawn GF)

Leon’s goal in the last quarter helped keep us in it. It was a brilliant goal.

B. H. Shaw B. Reid L.Davis
HB. J. Clement. D. Moore. S. Burns
C. D. Thomas. N. Buckley. P. Licuria
HF. S. Sidebottom. A. Rocca. A. Didak
F. C. Tarrant. T. Cloke. P. Medhurst
R. D. Jolly. S. Pendlebury D. Swan
IC. B. Grundy. N. Maxwell(c) L.Ball H. Lumumba

Would’ve liked to fit in Josh Fraser and Andy Krakouer as forwards and Tarkyn Lockyer and Jeremy Howe as defenders but they just missed out.

There was talk above about Leon but as a small defender he was a joy to watch and was elite. We haven’t had a small defender of his quality before or since, as far back as I can remember.

A lot of supporters seem to have an opinion about Paul Licuria that is different to mine. Gave his all, never stopped trying and squeezed out every bit of talent that he had. Back to back Copelands in good teams, which included Buckley. I will never forget his effort at Port in the night final. That was one of the best games I have seen from one of ours.

The challenge for me is to pick the truly greats rather than my favourites.
I'm looking for Copeland winners, All Australian and GF performers
There are many difficult decisions eg

Small Forwards - Leon v Bobby v Jamie
Forwards Rocca, Trav, Taz, Checkers,
Ruck Relief - Mason or Leroy or ?

Here is my team

HB Howe Maxwell Maynard
C Swan Buckley Pendlebury
HF Didak Cloke Thomas
F De Goey Rocca Elliott
Foll Grundy Burns Crisp
Int Sidebottom Johnson Licuria N Daicos
Sub Leon Davis

Nice thread. Here’s mine :

B : H.Shaw J.Clement. Maxwell
HB : L.Davis. D.Moore. Lumumba
C : N.Daicos. N Buckley. S Sidebottom
HF: D Thomas. A Rocca A.Didak
F : De Goey. T.Cloke. J.Elliott

R : Jolley Pendlebury. Swan

IC : Cox Burns. Licuria Crisp

- Cox and Jolley over Grundy because Cox has torn big games apart and Grundy is not a #2 ruckman. Jolley was potent around the ground and in attack right across his career, averaging a goal a game in 2010 as a #1 ruckman
- Clement over Presti because he was more creative and caused turnovers rather than just stopping his opposite number
- N Daicos because though the track record is young, I have never such elite football speed of mind
- Maxwell because of his inspirational leadership
- Lumumba over Howe just because the rest of the backline needs speed and he was a *great* attacking backman.
Hill might soon displace Elliott from the side, partly for reasons of speed, but we need a bit more evidence.
