Well it's a win. There's some gapping holes in our team. The biggest problem is our execution of forward momentum. We need Pendelbury in nearly every play forward to make things happen. He needs help. Maynard, Taylor and Crisp are our go forward grunt types and there's your best and fairest btw but theres little else to positively talk about.
Umpires will cause us more pain this season. Mark my words.

Bloody cricket pitches. Bad for the coccyxRonnie McKeowns boots wrote:I thought Cox played his way into the game after a quiet 1st half, which was good.
Appleby; its a 'no' for me, at least in the forward half.
Can't imagine Cameron will get up next week given that coxis cruncher, so Cox gets another week.
Browns in for JT/Varcoe, Stevo in for the Appleman

Got the win which we needed. But we're unlikely to trouble anyone come finals time (that's if we even make it). 43 i50s for 3 marks is nothing short of disgusting. Most of our goals came from norf turnovers. We beat up on a side who are very inferior and injury ravaged so we shouldn't get too carried away. We lack in so many areas it's not funny. Our game plan is, well, who knows what our game plan is. We're still too handball happy and continue to turn the ball over at all costs. I'm hoping this win tonight will generate some momentum going forward but who knows with this team. We've been up and down for so long. No sidebum next week. He's a big loss. Does Stevo come back?

Good to get the win, but we are just plonking along. North are in a very dark place aren't they? They have a lot of injuries too. Have to say we have been lucky to get Adelaide and North in recent weeks for some needed points. It's hard to get excited over that performance though, some nice bits of play here and there ending in goals but mostly it was a scrappy turnover affair from two poorly skilled sides. Still far too many non-best 22 obviously, but even many that are in our best still don't look up to speed.
The class of Pendlebury and Sidebottom (as usual) was the difference in this, not much else. Cox is problematic. We look better up forward with him lumbering around, but he just doesn't impose himself does he? Physically very weak, you see him beaten in every one on one contest which is so frustrating to watch. Yes, he gets held a lot but Tarrant was pushing him around all night, never once saw Cox push him back and win a contest.
We looked our most dangerous when we just forced the ball forward chaos style. Why we don't do this more often is beyond my comprehension. A poorly skilled team should be doing this as Plan A, no over handballing if you cannot execute without fumbling......but we insist to persist. Just move the ball forward quickly at any cost Pies, you look better for it.
What is up with Varcoe? He was appalling tonight, so many lazy kicks, poor decisions, just looked half asleep. Might be his last season. Cameron is a decent mark but not much else in the trick bag there. Appleby is not a forwards boot lace, no real goal smarts there. Why would you put yourself hard up on the fence after marking the ball 1m off the goal line? How stupid can you be? Thomas probably played his best game for the year, even excusing that massive brain fart, how do you not call Ruscoe up into that short pass for a clear shot, no communication.
Next week has me concerned. The Scum is not what we need right now. They'll be keen to expose our sloppiness, I can only hope they have poor one due.

Correct, K.K wrote:7th is average, so that would match, but maybe when you say "average", you really mean "way below average".Jezza wrote:Far from perfect, but it's always good to win.
Funny we're sitting 7th despite our average form.
Used the wrong phrase.

I think Madgen is underrated in the team. Hasn't had a bad game since returning.Presti35 wrote:Although not in the bests, I thought JT was much better tonight.
I thought Greenwood was good in patches. He isnt finished yet.
Mayne was also very good tonight. Daicos was also good again.
Dont know what to think about Cox.
We are in desperate need of a FF.

I thought Levi was a real asset with his customary toughness. It was great to see it again!Presti35 wrote:Although not in the bests, I thought JT was much better tonight.

Coxy's tap ons and handballs were directly responsible for at least three goals and his tackle on the half back line was quite remarkable He stays in for sure.
Just simply love young Daics. He 's an absolute goer with elite skills.
Surprisingly, JT did quite well tonight. What do we know about team selection??
Pendles led the way , ably backed up by Adams.
A much better team performance all round.

We've beaten three bottom four sides in Sydney, Adelaide and North Melbourne to keep us in the top 8. At least we're still winning enough games to keep ticking along, but there's no doubt we've been struggling since the West Coast match.
Good to see Greenwood back in the team, and he provided some much needed hardness which has been lacking for a long time. Out of the older brigade, he's one I would be inclined to retain for next year.
I've been very critical of Cox lately, but he was serviceable tonight. Still think we need to find a replacement in the off-season but at least he provided a meaningful contribution throughout the night. It worries me though how easily he's pushed aside in a one-on-one contest.
The usual suspects in Grundy, Pendles, Sidebottom, Maynard, Adams and Moore were all very good. Wish Sidey all the best on the impending birth of his child.
Carlton is a 50/50 game for mine, and the Fox commentators seem to suggest we will be underdogs particularly with Sidebottom returning to Melbourne. Would be great to finally level up the h2h record against them after nearly 40 years waiting.

Madgen has been a very reliable defender for us this year. Yes, he has made a few clangers but who hasn't. He looks supremely fit compared to last year where he looked to be carrying a few extra VFL kilos. He has improved himself and is taking his opportunity. Would still prefer Howe but Madge is going alright.alexjvillani wrote:I think Madgen is underrated in the team.
